Studio Practice

Multitrack

Definition

A recording approach in which each instrument or voice is captured on a separate, independent audio track, allowing individual editing, processing, and mixing of each element after recording. The foundation of modern studio production.

In Simple Terms

Recording each instrument on its own separate track, so you can edit, process, and mix them independently. This is how virtually all studio music is made — it gives you total control over every element.

In Practice

A rock band records drums, bass, guitars, and vocals on separate multitrack channels, allowing the engineer to adjust the level, EQ, and compression of each element independently during mixing.
