Dynamics

Multiband Compression

Definition

A compressor that divides the frequency spectrum into multiple bands and applies independent compression to each. Allows precise dynamic control in specific frequency ranges without affecting others.

In Simple Terms

A compressor that works on different frequency ranges independently. It can tame boomy bass without affecting the sparkle of your cymbals. Powerful but easy to overdo—use it when regular compression isn't surgical enough.

In Practice

A multiband compressor in mastering controls excessive low-mid buildup when the bass plays full notes, without reducing the energy of the high frequencies simultaneously.

Common Confusion

A multiband compressor is not "EQ with dynamics." It applies compression only when a band exceeds its threshold; it does not statically boost or cut. Used as a static tone-shaper, it sounds like an inferior EQ. Used to control problematic dynamic resonances (vocal sibilance, bass buildup, harshness peaks), it solves problems that EQ alone cannot.
