Binaural
Definition
A spatial audio technique that uses head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to simulate three-dimensional sound over headphones by encoding directional and spatial cues into a two-channel signal. The listener perceives audio as coming from specific positions in space — including height and rear — without a speaker array.
In Simple Terms
A way to make headphones sound like you're in a real 3D space, with sounds coming from above, behind, and around you. It's how Dolby Atmos works when you're wearing earbuds.
Dolby Atmos Context
Binaural rendering is how Dolby Atmos reaches streaming listeners on headphones. The spatial metadata in the mix is interpreted and reproduced through HRTF processing by the playback device.
