Spatial & Atmos

Bed (Dolby Atmos)

Definition

In Dolby Atmos, a bed is a fixed multichannel audio element rendered to specific speaker positions (e.g., 7.1.2). Beds provide the consistent spatial foundation of a mix — ambience, music, room tone — while audio objects move dynamically around them.

In Simple Terms

The stable, always-there layer in a 3D mix — background music, room tone, ambience. While individual sounds (objects) can fly around the room, the bed stays put and wraps around the listener.

Dolby Atmos Context

Beds and objects coexist in every Atmos mix. Beds are for consistency; objects are for movement and specific spatial placement.
