Stereo

Definition

A two-channel audio format using left and right channels to create a horizontal sense of space and width. The standard format for music distribution and a foundational component of surround and immersive audio mixes.

In Simple Terms

Two channels-left and right-creating the sense of width you hear in headphones or speakers. Almost all music is delivered in stereo. It's the standard.

In Practice

A stereo mix positions instruments across the left-right field, creating a sound stage that is wider and more spatially engaging than a mono speaker can reproduce.
