Fundamentals

Stereo

Definition

A two-channel audio format using left and right channels to create a horizontal sense of space and width. The standard format for music distribution and a foundational component of surround and immersive audio mixes.

In Simple Terms

Two channels—left and right—creating the sense of width you hear in headphones or speakers. Almost all music is delivered in stereo. It's the standard.

In Practice

A stereo mix positions instruments across the left-right field, creating a sound stage that is wider and more spatially engaging than a mono speaker can reproduce.
