Pan Pot
Definition
Short for "panoramic potentiometer." The rotary control on a mixing console or DAW channel that positions the signal within the stereo field between left and right. At center, the signal is equal in both channels; fully left or right sends the signal to only that channel.
In Simple Terms
The knob that places a sound left, right, or center in your stereo field. Short for "panoramic potentiometer" — but everyone just calls it the pan knob.
In Practice
The hi-hat is panned slightly to the right on the pan pot to match the drummer's perspective, while the kick and snare remain centered, creating a natural stereo image of the drum kit.
