Fundamentals

Mid Frequency

Definition

The range of frequencies roughly between 250 Hz and 4 kHz, encompassing the fundamental harmonics and presence of most musical instruments and the human voice. The mid range is the most perceptually sensitive region of human hearing and carries the majority of tonal information in a mix.

In Simple Terms

The frequency range (roughly 250 Hz to 4 kHz) where most of the action lives — vocals, guitars, pianos, snare drums. This is where your ears are most sensitive, so small EQ changes here have a big impact.

In Practice

A nasal, boxy quality in a vocal recording often comes from excess energy around 500–800 Hz. Cutting this region with a gentle parametric EQ opens up the sound without removing warmth or presence.
