Dynamics

Dynamic EQ

Definition

An equalizer that applies gain changes to specific frequency bands only when the signal in that band exceeds a set threshold. Combines the frequency targeting of an EQ with the dynamic response of a compressor. More transparent than multiband compression for surgical tonal control.

In Simple Terms

An EQ that only adjusts frequencies when they get too loud. Unlike a regular EQ that's always on, a dynamic EQ waits until there's actually a problem and then surgically fixes just that moment.

In Practice

A dynamic EQ is used on an acoustic guitar to tame a 300 Hz buildup only when the guitarist plays full chord shapes, leaving the frequency unaffected during single-note passages.

Common Confusion

Dynamic EQ and multiband compression are often confused. A dynamic EQ targets a frequency band with EQ-like precision; multiband compression divides the spectrum into crossover regions with compression behavior. The boundary between them is increasingly blurred in modern tools.
