Word Clock

Definition

A synchronization signal used in professional digital audio systems to ensure that all digital devices operate at precisely the same sample rate and timing reference. Without accurate word clock synchronization, multiple digital devices running together can exhibit jitter, clicks, or phase drift.

In Simple Terms

A timing signal that keeps multiple digital audio devices perfectly in sync. Only relevant if your studio has several hardware units connected digitally. One device is the master clock, and everything else follows its timing.

In Practice

In a large studio setup with multiple digital devices — converters, digital consoles, effects processors — a dedicated master clock sends word clock to each unit, ensuring they all operate from the same timing reference and eliminating jitter caused by each device running its own independent clock.
