Loudness Normalization

Definition

The automatic adjustment of playback level by streaming platforms to a target integrated loudness, measured in LUFS. Unlike simple peak normalization, it accounts for perceptual loudness across the entire track. Tracks louder than the target are turned down; tracks below the target are not turned up.

In Simple Terms

Streaming platforms automatically adjust playback volume so every song feels roughly the same loudness. If your track is too loud, they turn it down. This means crushing your master for loudness actually backfires — you just lose dynamics.

In Practice

Mastering to -14 LUFS integrated ensures a track plays back at the intended level on Spotify without being reduced, preserving the dynamic contrast the mix engineer intended.
