AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format)
Definition
An uncompressed audio file format developed by Apple. Functionally identical to WAV in audio quality but uses a different metadata and container structure. Common in Apple-centric production environments.
In Simple Terms
Apple's version of a WAV file. Same audio quality, different wrapper. If someone asks for a WAV and you have an AIFF, the conversion changes nothing about the sound.
In Practice
A session exported from Logic Pro X defaults to AIFF format. While functionally identical to WAV, it may be converted for cross-platform compatibility with certain delivery systems.
Common Confusion
There is no audio quality difference between AIFF and WAV — both are uncompressed PCM. Conversion between the two is a container swap, not a quality change.
