A/B Comparison
Definition
The practice of switching rapidly between two audio signals — often two mixes, two plugin settings, or a processed and unprocessed signal — to evaluate differences objectively.
In Simple Terms
Switching back and forth between two versions of your mix to hear the difference. The key rule: make them the same volume first, or the louder one will always sound better and trick you.
In Practice
An engineer A/B compares the mix with and without the bus compressor to confirm it is adding cohesion rather than just volume.
Common Confusion
A/B comparisons must be level-matched. The louder version almost always sounds better, which can lead to incorrect conclusions.
