44.1 kHz
Definition
A sample rate of 44,100 samples per second. The standard for CD audio and most music streaming platforms. Sufficient to reproduce frequencies up to approximately 20 kHz, covering the full range of human hearing.
In Simple Terms
The standard for music. It captures everything the human ear can hear. Unless you're working with video, this is the sample rate you'll deliver your music at.
In Practice
A finished music mix is bounced at 44.1 kHz / 24-bit before being sent to a mastering engineer.
Common Confusion
Higher sample rates are not necessarily better for the listener. The benefits of 96 kHz or 192 kHz are most relevant during processing, not playback.
