16-bit

Definition

A digital audio bit depth offering 65,536 possible amplitude values and a theoretical dynamic range of approximately 96 dB. Standard for CD audio.

In Simple Terms

CD quality. Perfectly fine for the final file your listeners hear, but not ideal for recording or mixing — use 24-bit for that.

In Practice

A stereo mixdown exported at 16-bit / 44.1 kHz is the standard delivery format for CD mastering.

Common Confusion

16-bit is sufficient for final delivery, but not ideal for recording or processing, where headroom and rounding errors matter.
